What Motivates You?

My personal leadership quote is: if you want people to follow you, then lead them where opportunity produces results that merit their time.

I lead myself using the same principle.

If I were to come after you with a stick or a carrot which would motivate you most? The pain or the reward?

Sure, the consequence of pain (fear) can be a very powerful motivator. However, the reality is that motivation based on fear tends to lead us to hide or run away.

Results, or what I like to call, little “well done’s” help us stay motivated! Little accomplishments keep us on track toward greater accomplishment. Something that merits our time should deliver an outcome of impact, not just keep us busy.

Recently, I was in a brainstorming meeting with our team catalst, Dave Nowak, at New Missions. We were unwrapping a new event idea and the brainstorm began by asking what will make the biggest difference? What’s truly worth our time? This motivated us to dream about what would truly matter in the effort to change lives. This driving force led us to maximize the potential of a new idea.

What wakes me up each day is opportunity. I am optimistic. Yet, when I go to sleep at night, I am conservative. Let me explain. What motivates me is the fun that I can find inside what I do. It’s the pleasure that motivates me most. At the end of the day, I want to rest in peace knowing that I gave my best and served with passion. It’s not the risk that drives me, but the thrill of the risk. I hit my conservative breaks when I know the day is over and that’s it. The simple truth of giving my best and having fun was enough.

What motivates you? Money? Goals? Affirmation? Recognition? Status? Making a difference? Acceptance?

My three personal guidelines for motivation are:
1. If the desired outcome is not clear, it’s hard to stay motivate. Keep asking why?
2. If the difference made is not a measurable positive impact, consider another option. I want my life to count for something. Therefore, my time should be dedicated to a role that serves a cause.
3. Money is not the highest reward. Yes, we all need money. I also believe that money is not a dirty word. However, money is not always the best motivator. In my personal experience, gratification is the greatest reward. Are you satisified? You could make millions and not be satisfied.

Back to the quote I started this post with. Why is the result so important? Life is short and time is a gift so let’s share it wisely for something that motivates.

Are you motivated today? Why? If not, what are you missing?

One Response to “What Motivates You?”

  1. Brother Frankie says:

my motivation is the word of God.
i never try to lead myself. that would be sinful.

the bottom line with all my choices, motivation, joy, and accomplishments is taken from romans..

is it life or death? spirit or flesh?

will this conform me more into the image of christ?
does it avoid the appearance of evil?
will it hurt a brother or sister in christ?
offend? (not the unsaved, the gospel IS offensive)

    is it love?
